Dawn Gray is a mother, grandmother and great grandmother who came to the United States when she was seven years old. From her first days in California, the adults in her life kept Gray and her siblings from speaking in Spanish. (Photo by Shaylyn Martos/NextGenRadio)
My project for NPR's NextGenerationRadio project at Capital Public Radio in Sacramento in October 2019.
Being a 2019 NextGen mentee was a dream come true, especially because of the talented and diverse team I got to work with. My project is a non-narrated audio piece with multimedia build-out, but more importantly it is a compelling story about a young girl's first days in the United States, and the woman she is now.
Thank you to Dawn Gray, who told our team of four women of color as we left her home, "If you had been four men, I wouldn't have let you in."
